Chapter 10

“She said what?” Cassandra asked and clapped her hands to her mouth as I stood in the doorway of her room. “She just admitted all of that, without any sort of prompting?”

“No prompting,” I said and knew how surprised I sounded. “It’s sort of insane, actually.”

“I’ll say!” Cassandra exclaimed and shook her head. “And here I thought that I had the best news by finding out that Oliver hasn’t said anything to any of the officers yet. He barely wanted to talk to me, and I think it was because you said he was only supposed to talk to you, and he took it very seriously.”

“Well, that is still good news.” I gave a small shake of my head at her news and snorted. “The last thing we want is for Oliver to make more trouble for himself, because Jorie Tenner didn’t exactly exonerate him, and we still don’t have his alibi.”

My paralegal sighed and snapped her fingers in defeat.

“Well, it’s some progress, at least,” she finally said. “We have a better place to start looking, at any rate. Maybe we should talk to Oliver again to see if we can get him to talk about his alibi.”

“If he even has one, I suspect it will take a bit more work to worm it out of him,” I said more to myself than to Cassandra. “We should get the affidavit drawn up first, anyway, though, before we do anything else. We need to get that DNA sample from Zooplicate before we can do anything else.”

“Actually,” Cassandra corrected me. “We should get something to eat. I’m starving, Reese, and we’ve been going all day without getting any food. Some of us can’t survive on coffee and testosterone alone.”

I glanced down at my watch and realized that we had been going for quite some time without so much as stopping. I snorted and shook my head at her defense, however.

“You’re right,” I said and dropped my hand back down. “How about you go find some food for the both of us, and I’ll get started on the paperwork?”

She clapped her hands gleefully, and for a moment, I thought she would hug me.

“That was exactly what I wanted to hear from you!” she announced before she disappeared back into her room and emerged with her shoes on and her coat draped over her arms. “Keys?”

“Keys?” I repeated and looked down at her extended hand before I realized what it was she was asking for. “Uh, no, you are not driving my truck.”

“You’re going to make me walk to get food?” she asked and planted her hands on her hips as she glowered up at me, which wasn’t very threatening when paired with her bright cats-eye glasses and the pout on her face.

“I’m glad we’re on the same page,” I said with a grin. “Everything in this town is within walking distance, anyway.”

“You’re lucky that I like this job,” she said with a shake of her head and an overdramatic huff.

“And I’m lucky
